FDA Warns Viagra Users About New Risks
Viagra is a popular drug worldwide, but now the FDA is warning men who take it they could be at risk.
Viagra is an international best seller. The little blue pill and competitors like it are taken by millions of men including retired doctor O'Dell Mulpus.
"Yes, I use it now," says Mulpus.
But, the Food and Drug Administration is warning of a possible problem with impotence drugs. Since 1996, the FDA has received 29 reports of people on the prescriptions suffering sudden hearing loss.
Warnings will now be added to Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Revatio, which is a drug for pulmonary hypertension, which contains the same ingredient as Viagra.
This isn't the first report of problems with Viagra and similar medications. The labels warn that on 'rare' occasions men taking these drugs have experienced sudden vision loss, heart attack, stroke and irregular heart beat.
But, Mount Sinai Medical Center's Dr. Natan Bar-Chama says the risk is very small and theres no direct link between these drugs and hearing loss.
"Over time we will find out if this is a coincidence or if there are some science behind this," explains Dr. Bar-Chama.
Experts say men on the medicine should be aware of symptoms.
"If you experience hearing loss, sudden hearing loss, stop the medication and call us," says Dr. Bar-Chama.
But there is no need to panic.
"Well, I dont think its a big concern," says Mulpus.
Despite the new warning, it's likely these pills will remain as popular as ever.
In most cases, the hearing loss is involved in one ear. In just a third of the cases, it was just temporary.
