The Toddler Kept Alive By a Daily Dose Of...Viagra
WHEN Jessica Findlay was a baby, she was struck down by a serious illness so rare it did not have a name but could claim her life at any second.
As the arteries in her heart and lungs narrowed, baffled doctors searched for a treatment which would keep blood pumping around her body.
But her mother was shocked at the medics' decision - daily doses of Viagra, the controversial drug commonly used to treat male impotence.
Sildenafil, the medical name for Viagra, boosts the blood circulation around the four-year-old's body and helps ease the strain on her heart.
Jessica, of Troon, Ayrshire, was among the first children in Scotland to use the medicine to combat an artery condition and now takes it eight times every day.
The youngster combines it with a cocktail of other drugs in her fight for survival, but her mother Rachel, 25, said she was astonished when doctors told her they were going to give Jessica Viagra.
She said: 'It is not something I would have associated with little girls but it seems to be working and she has stunned doctors.
She is a wee fighter.
'But her condition means that any time I spend away from her I am on a knife edge. I can't sleep at night because I am frightened she might go in the night.
'It means I have to live my life day to day and enjoy every minute I spend with Jessica.' Jessica was diagnosed with severe multiple bilateral pulmonary stenosis when she was 18 months old after she collapsed at 'Incredibly difficult to treat'
home. The arteries in both sides of her heart and lungs have begun narrowing, making it hard for blood to pump around her body and leaving her at risk of organ failure.
Only one other child in the UK is known to suffer from the condition which constricts the flow of blood in the organs and starves the body of oxygenated blood.
Normally, doctors treat children who only have the problem on one side of their heart. But the severity of Jessica's case means she is left out of breath and weak from the slightest exertion and has to spend time resting when she could be playing with her friends.
She has undergone six operations at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill, Glasgow, to insert balloons and stents into her arteries to prevent them from closing but, so far, the efforts have failed.
Miss Findlay said: 'Sometimes
I get angry. I wonder why my little girl has got this when she has never done any harm to anyone.
But she has such a fantastic character - she looks after me as much as I look after her and loves going to nursery.' At Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, Dr Frances Bu'Lock, one of Britain's top child heart and lung specialists, said Jessica's condition was one of the first cases she had encountered.
She said it was so difficult to treat because the veins in the heart and lungs were situated in branches.
Dr Bu'Lock added: 'This is an extremely rare condition and it is incredibly difficult to treat, especially if it affects the lungs.
'Sildenafil works by improving blood flow in the blood vessels but the treatment is rare and has only been used for a couple of years.
'There are only around 200 children in the UK who have received this drug.'
