Health Canada issues alerts for lactation stimulant, anti-impotence drugs

08 January 2008 (Tuesday)

Health Canada has issued safety alerts on possible side effects linked with an erectile dysfunction treatment and a lactation stimulant.

The alert issued Monday applies to the Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsules and Galactogil, neither of which has been approved for sale in Canada.

Health Canada warns Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsules contain sildenafil, a drug that should only be taken under a doctor's supervision. Patients with heart disease may experience side effects including cardiac death, heart attack, stroke, hypertension, chest pain and abnormal heartbeat, the federal agency said.

Other side effects include vision loss, seizure and prolonged erection. People taking nitrate drugs such as nitroglycerine are also advised not to use the product for risk of developing dangerously low blood pressure.

Consumers are also warned that bacteria found certain lots of Galactogil may cause serious health issues including pneumonia, blood poisoning, stillbirth, and miscarriage. Bacterial infections may also cause serious illness in newborn infants.

The alert applies to the following lot numbers of Galactogil:

  • 1040 (Expiry date 11/2007).
  • 1438 to 1463 (Expiry dates 04/2012 to 07/2012).
  • 1466 to 1472 (Expiry date 08/2012).

The products were not sold through Canadian retailers but may have been purchased by travellers or from online vendors.

Consumers with concerns should talk with their health care professional.
