Pills like Viagra are part of a billion dollar a year business. Yet only about 65 percent of men with erectile dysfunction find help with medications.

Many men are being helped with a little known surgical procedure.

Gaery Goodman and his wife have shared 26 years of marriage, a marriage strained by the after effects of his prostate cancer treatment. Surgery and radiation caused impotence that pills and shots couldn't cure.

"I won't say you're desperate, but you want some resemblance of normalcy again," Goodman said. "And if that's the only hope you have, you're willing to try it."

His hope was a surgical procedure called a penile implant, where doctors make about a one-inch incision in the scrotum and insert two plastic tubes into the penis.

"In each erection chamber is a cylinder, so there are two cylinders. Down in the scrotum is a little pump, and it's about the size of a marble. And there's a little reservoir that's like a small balloon.," said Dr. LeRoy Jones, a urological surgeon at Methodist Hospital.

That balloon holds sterile water. When the man is ready to have sex, he uses the pump to inflate the plastic inserts and achieve an erection. The implants are made of silicone and coated with antibiotic to cut down the risk of infection. The surgery takes less than an hour in an outpatient setting, and patients are able to have sex again in about seven weeks.

Jones says his patients are happy with the result.

"It's usually part of the relationship that was missing for a few years," he said. "So now you've restored it. The wives are happy. It brings them closer to their husbands, and I think that's sort of the key thing."

"It's something that you're doing for you, your wife, as a couple ... to bring yourselves back together again," Goodman said.

Jones is one of the leading implant surgeons in the country, performing about 100 of these procedures a year. He thinks more men need to know this option exists.
