Pfizer Replies To Viagra Criticism

21 December 2006 (Thursday)

Pfizer, the maker of the best selling erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has hit back at claims that its impotence drug adverts are promoting irresponsible and dangerous promiscuous sex and that they could be the reason for many people getting HIV. Recently Ukmedix reported that a major Los Angeles based charity was of the opinion that the way that the adverts for Viagra were being portrayed were making Viagra look like a fun recreational drug and not a serious medicine for men with impotence.

Opinions are divided on this issue and as it is very difficult to define exactly when a man actually needs an erectile dysfunction drug or when he is just using it to better his performance. For example does a man who is able to have sex once a day but wants to have sex twice a day need Viagra? Most people would probably say no, expect of course the man himself who would argue that he used to be able to have sex twice daily and that the Viagra can now help him.

On the other extreme should a man who has been taking drugs and drinking all-night and then is unable to perform sexually be entitled to a prescription of Viagra? I think most people would say that he shouldn’t.

There is also the issue of profits as Pfizer is likely to make far more money if more men who are borderline cases for erectile dysfunction drugs use them. All men like a boost in sexual performance from time to time and therefore would like to get their hands on Viagra or any other erectile dysfunction drug.

The problem with Viagra is that it is being used by many gay men who indulge in risky sexual practices and take drugs like meths that cloud their sexual judgment. Maybe Viagra should be including a warning in their labeling that Viagra and drink and drugs don’t mix and can put you into a dangerous risk bracket for sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.

Pfizer already warns that Viagra does not protect against STD’s but maybe the warnings should be made more obvious and written on the packaging in the same way as health messages are written on cigarette packets.
