Viagra And Its Cousin Revatio

14 March 2006 (Tuesday)

Viagra or sildenafil as the active ingredient is known, is mainly referred to as the drug to cure erectile dysfunction in men. However following extensive research it is now being repackaged for other uses and has been called Revatio. Still produced by Pfizer, Revatio has been noted to treat a very rare but deadly disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension PAH.

Pulmonary hypertension strikes the young and old and effect women in greater number than men and will eventually cause a partial heart failure. The patients of PAH have to lead sedentary lives and are unable to live normally.

PH is difficult to diagnose as it is so similar to many other heart complaints. Many live with it for years and resign themselves to second rate existences, however with the new Revatio or sildenafil drug, sufferers have more hope and a possibility of leading better lives.

The drug works by opening the arteries that cause the hypertension. The mechanism is the same as the Viagra mechanisn except it is being applied in a different part of the body. The uses of Viagra and sildenafil are increasing as more research is done with the drug.

It may have some pleasant side effects too!
