Viagra Research On The Heart

21 April 2006 (Friday)

ildenafil citrate the drug commonly known as Viagra appears to be effective in a number of other applications other than for erectile dysfunction. Recent research conducted on dogs showed that those animals given the sildenafil had a much improved bloodflow in their coronary arteries than in the dogs not treated with sildenafil. The research involved inducing an artery blockage in the dogs similar to the effect of a heart attack and then treating it with the Viagra drug. The research was published by the U.S College of Cardiology Journal.

The Viagra drug stopped the function of coronary occlusion in the dogs when heart attacks were induced which is an interesting development as on the warning labels of the drug people with heart problems are advised to stay away from Viagra.

In all 12 dogs were used and a heart attack situation similar to a normal human heart attack was created in each animal. This was done by the tightening of a coronary artery so that a blood clot stopped the blood flow. Immediately after the blockage occured the dogs were given aspirin and heparin as well as a blood clot relieving drug called tPA to get some blood flowing through the heart again.

The dogs were carefully monitored over the course of the research and six dogs were given the Viagra in the same quantity that is used for men who have erectile dysfunction. Soon the blood flow into the heart was back to normal in all of the dogs except one of those given the Viagra, whereas all the dogs that didn't receive the Viagra were still suffering from the coronary restrictions.

The Viagra significantly improved the blood flow to the heart by as much as 30% and this figure increased with the dogs that received larger doses of Viagra. This research opens the way to more detailed and serious testing on the use of Viagra to treat heart attack patients. Previously the generally accepted wisdom was that the Viagra could actually be actual reason for a heart attack but this research seems to give the opposite result that will be of big interest for men who have previously not used Viagra due to heart problems.

Erectile dysfunction can often be an indicator of cardio disease, and a heart check up is always advised before using Viagra especially in older men. The sexual activity that Viagra allows can cause a certain strain on the heart and so this research must not be considered to be green light for heart patients to go rushing out to buy Viagra.

You must also be aware that the use of Viagra can interact potentially fatally with nitroglycerin which is also used for the heart. Viagra and nitroglycerin when interacting can reduce blood pressure to a dangerous level. The actual mechanism by which the coronary blood flow is enhanced by Viagra is the same mechanism that cures erectile dysfunction, namely by the inhibiting of the phosphodiesterase-5 or PDE5, sildenafil increases the nitric oxide function that is necessary for the blood vessels to release and to allow blood flow to the penile arteries and form erections.

Far from being a heart attack inducing drug, Pfizer may soon be marketing Viagra under a different name for a different use to curing erectile dysfunction and impotence in men.
