Viagra Rumours Unfounded

14 August 2007 (Tuesday)

Rumours that get spread around the world very fast through the use of the internet can be worrying and cause great harm especially if they are untrue. Pfizer who make the world best selling erectile dysfunction medication Viagra have been dealing with rumours that their impotence drug can cause a lack of the fertility in men.

According to Pfizer this rumour cannot be substantiated by any research and is purely an urban myth that has made the rounds because it just seemed like a good story to some people. Pfizer also said that nothing ever came up in the thousands of clinical trials that they did before the drug was used and on top of this millions and millions of men have been using Viagra for many many years and there has been no single report that a man’s fertility was affected by it. The fact that a man is able to have sex for longer and produces firmer erections in fact improves the fertility of a man rather than diminishing it.

The rumours started after some research was done at Queen’s University in Belfast which showed that Viagra could make male sperm produce an enzyme which meant that during the reproductive process it broke through the membrane of the egg before it was actually supposed to. However it should be pointed out that none of these tests were done with human sperm and Pfizer said the research was merely a “test tube study”.

At Ukmedix News we find it impossible to believe that Viagra could cause fertility problems as the sheer scale of use of the drug would mean that fertility issues in men would have come to light years and years ago if there were any.
