Viagra The Anti Depression Drug
We know the following at Ukmedix from the feedback we get from men who have suffered from erectile dysfunction and then been cured of it by using Viagra or one of the other erectile dysfunction drugs and now new research confirms what we have believed all along.
In Canada at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Psychiatric Association a research pare was presented that clearly shows that men with erectile dysfunction who are successfully treated for their depression with sildenafil (the active ingredient of Viagra) will report a lessening of their depression and also a big improvement in their quality of life.
It is a fact of like that many men with erectile dysfunction get depression as a result and in this research program the scientists wanted to look at the Viagra effect on otherwise untreated depression in patients with erectile dysfunction.
The researchers conducted a double blind, randomised study that also made use of placebos. The men were studied for six weeks and were all suffering from erectile dysfunction and were assessed for depression using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and all scored between 14 and 28 on the assessment. The erectile dysfunction of each man was also assessed using questionnaires and quality of life was also gauged using Patient Reported Erectile Function Assessment.
The average age of the 185 men assessed was 51 and at the start of the research the average BDI score was 18.33 for the placebo group and 17.99 for the Viagra group. When the six weeks were up it was noted that the BDI score for the group receiving the placebo 13.58 and the score for the Viagra group was 9.52.
The men filled in questionnaires and it was revealed that 63% of the Viagra group gained erections and so did 53% of the group getting the placebo. Seventy seven percent of the men who took Viagra were able to have successful sexual intercourse compared to 40% for the placebo group.
The Quality of life assessment also showed that men who used the Viagra gained better scores that the ones using the placebo. The researchers said that Viagra could also be considered to be a drug for depressed patients and not purely a drug for erectile dysfunction.
